Kallaste Farm lies four kilometres away from Rummu Lake. This mysterious lake, 45 kilometres and 45 minutes southwest from Tallinn, hides an old quarry, where the inmates of the nearby Murru prison mined limestone during the Soviet years. At the beginning of the 1990s, the quarry was closed, and the rising groundwater quickly sunk its buildings, machines and barbed wire fences, turning its trees and bushes into an underwater forest.
Kallaste Farm arranges hikes to Rummu’s ash heap, made from a by-product of the quarry. During the hike you will hear interesting stories about the history of the quarry and the prison closely related to it. The tours vary in length and are carried out for groups of 10 or more people.
Kallaste is also a holiday resort with a bunch of activities available. Get to know the farm history, pet the animals, enjoy sauna and play a round of disc golf, for example.
Transportation from Tallinn to Rummu and back can be arranged when booked in advance.
