Old Town Days: Tallinn 800

Add to Favourites Your favourite!

Since 1982, the Tallinn Old Town Days signify the beginning of summer in the city. The festival fills the streets with concerts, exhibitions, theatre plays, fairs and many other fun activities.
Each year, the festival centres around a specific topic. In 2019, the theme will be ‘Tallinn 800’, celebrating the first recorded mention of the city of Tallinn in 1219 in the Livonian Chronicle of Henry.
The chronicle describes when the Danish fleet led by King Valdemar II landed near Lindanise castle in June 1219. According to the chronicle, there was a battle at the location of what would become Tallinn on June 15, 1219 where the Danes won a difficult victory. The legend says that luck smiled upon the Danes after a red flag with a white cross fell from the sky — the Danneborg, the state flag of Denmark today (History of Tallinn).
